Education has been a big part of my life for over ten years now. From tutoring the children of Bhutanese refugees in Dallas to help then pass the SATs to teaching in public schools and tutoring students over the summer, I have long been involved in the world of education . Over the years, I've noticed big changes in how technology is used in and out of the classroom.
In the early 2010s, I used to photocopy pages of questions from SAT study guides or print out worksheets from various online resources to hand out to my students because I tutored them in person. At most, they would have had cellphones, possibly smartphones, but it was impossible to do everything digitally because it would have been a barrier to access for several if not many of them. Fast-forward to the 2020s, and I'm teaching Spanish in high schools where every student is assigned a basic laptop which they use for every part of their academic lives, from studying and working on projects to submitting assignments and participating in class. I had to adapt to this new environment and figure out ways to keep them engaged and using the tech they were given to further their learning instead of as a distraction. As a result, I learned that different strategies and tools worked better with some students and classes than others. Nowadays, as I tutor students in Spanish and help them prepare to take Credit by Exam tests over the summer, technology has become an essential mediator in my educational relationship, allowing me to work with students whenever and wherever.
I think part of being a good educator, especially these days, is being able to find and use the resources available to you as wisely as possible. Hopefully, this site helps other educators find useful education technology they can put to work.
